    Administration
Questions or inquiries regarding the GCSBBQA Team of the Year program should be directed to the GCSBBQA Board of Directors.

    Team of the Year Commissioner
The Grand Canyon State BBQ Association Board of Directors shall appoint an independent ToY Commissioner who shall serve as an Arbitrator should any disputes arise during the Contest Year. The ToY Commissioner will gather any and all information he/she deems necessary, conduct interviews with all parties involved and consult with any party he/she deems necessary in order to render a fair and just ruling. Rulings made by the ToY Commissioner will be final and binding on all parties involved.

Grand Canyon State BBQ Association ToY Divisions & Categories
    Divisions

The GCSBBQA ToY Races are broken into two (2) separate Divisions described as follows:

    • The Grand Canyon Cup – This division will use a Team’s six (6) best total point scores in each of the five (5) categories (described below) out of as many KCBS contests within Arizona and Nevada as it participates in throughout the Contest Year. However, a Team may use no more than two (2) contest results from Nevada events toward their six (6) contest total.
    • The Copper Star – This division will use a Team’s three (3) best total point scores in each of the five (5) categories (described below) out of no more than five (5) KCBS contests within Arizona and Nevada throughout the Contest Year. However, a Team may use no more than one (1) contest results from Nevada events toward their three (3) contest total. Once a Team has competed in six (6) qualifying contests in a the Contest Year, they are only eligible to win Grand Canyon Cup awards and are no longer eligible to win any Copper Star awards that year.

    Categories
The GCSBBQA ToY Races are broken into five (5) separate Categories described as follows:

    • Overall – This is a Team’s Overall finishing place in a Contest
    • Chicken – Chicken includes Cornish Game Hen and Kosher Chicken
    • Pork Ribs – Ribs shall include the bone. Country style ribs are prohibited
    • Pork – Pork is defined as Boston Butt, Boston Roast, Picnic and/or Whole Shoulder, weighing a minimum of four (4) pounds at the time of inspection. After trimming, Pork shall be cooked whole (bone in or bone out), however, once cooked, it may be separated and returned to the cooker at the cook's discretion. It may be turned in chopped, pulled, chunked, sliced or a combination of any of those.
    • Beef Brisket – May be whole brisket, flat, or point. Corned beef is not allowed.

    Teams
    Eligible Teams
Any competition barbeque team whose Head Cook is a Member in Good Standing of the Grand Canyon State BBQ Association is eligible to compete in the GCSBBQA ToY races. The Head Cook's GCSBBQA membership must be active prior to the day of any particular contest's turn in date in order to receive ToY points for the contest. Although published ToY points and divisional category standings are referenced by team name, ToY points are actually being awarded to and accumulated by the team's Head Cook.

What Is A Competition Barbeque Team?
A competition team consists of a Head Cook and as many Team Members as deemed necessary by the Head Cook in order to compete at barbeque contests. Teams may consist of only a Head Cook if that is what is desired by that team’s Head Cook.
In order to maintain the integrity of the GCSBBQA ToY races, Head Cooks are limited to cooking with only one team each Contest Year. The reasoning behind this limitation is to prevent the formation of late season “Super Teams” built to enhance a team’s chance of winning the ToY race near the end of a Contest Year. Furthermore, the first team that a Head Cook leads during any given Contest Year is the only team for which that Head Cook will accumulate points in that Contest Year.
Team Members are not limited and may cook on multiple teams throughout the Contest Year so long as they do not serve as a Head Cook on any team during that Contest Year.

Grand Canyon State BBQ Association ToY Events
    Event Eligibility
GCSBBQA ToY events are limited to competition barbeque events sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS), excluding KCBS “Competitor Series” events, held within the states of Arizona and Nevada. All integral components of the contest must fall within the legal borders of the states of Arizona and Nevada, including but not limited to: team area and cook sites, judging area, team services and award presentation site.
In addition, all of the following requirements must be met:

    • Must be an open and non-invitational contest.
    • Must cook all four (4) standard competition meat categories - Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork and Beef Brisket.
    • Must provide overall and individual meat category scoring through the entire field.

The GCSBBQA reserves the right to revoke ToY eligibility to an event for any reason.

    Event Organizer Requirements
The organizer of a GCSBBQA ToY event must:

    • Remain in compliance with the national sanctioning body’s rules at all times.
    • Allow the GCSBBQA to display GCSBBQA and ToY signage at the sanctioned contest.

The GCSBBQA, at its discretion, reserves the right to take any action it deems necessary against an organizer that fails to follow the ToY rules and requirements for an event. Penalties for non-compliance include, but are not limited to, the revocation of the ToY eligibility for the offending event and/or future events held by the organizer.

Grand Canyon State BBQ Association ToY Awards
In 2015, the GCSBBQA will award the top three (3) Teams in the Overall category and the top (3) Teams in each of the four (4) individual meat categories.

    Trophies
    Perpetual Trophies
The GCSBBQA will award a perpetual trophy to the winning team in the Overall category for each Division each year. This trophy shall remain the legal property of the GCSBBQA. Each winning team agrees and acknowledges, by its acceptance of the Perpetual Trophy, that such trophy remains the property of the GCSBBQA and agrees to return possession of the trophy, without damage, to the GCSBBQA by January 1st of the following year, so that these trophies may be inscribed with the name of the subsequent year's winner and be presented thereto. Each winning team agrees to maintain the Perpetual Trophy in good condition and agrees to reimburse the GCSBBQA for any loss or damage thereto.

    Permanent Trophies
In addition to the Perpetual Trophies, the GCSBBQA shall present permanent trophies to the top three (3) Teams in the Overall category and the top (3) Teams in each of the four individual meat categories in each Division. These Permanent Trophies shall become the permanent property of the teams to which they are awarded. The Permanent Trophies need not be of similar value as the Perpetual Trophies.

Grand Canyon State BBQ Association ToY Point System
    Overview
The GCSBBQA ToY Point System is one in which every team competing at an event earns points and is designed to reward consistently excellent team performance throughout the Contest Year. The manner in which Teams earn points is identical for both Divisions of the points race. Teams will earn “Position Points” based upon their finish place in the Overall and individual meat categories as well as receiving “Bonus Points” based upon the number of teams competing in that particular event.

    Position Points
Teams will earn Position Points in the Overall and individual meat categories as follows:

    PLACE ---- POINTS
    1st --------- 200
    2nd --------- 180
    3rd --------- 160
    4th --------- 140
    5th --------- 120
    6th --------- 112
    7th --------- 104
    8th --------- 96
    9th --------- 88
    10th -------- 80
    11th -------- 76
    12th -------- 72
    13th -------- 68
    14th -------- 64
    15th -------- 60
    16th -------- 56
    17th -------- 52
    18th -------- 48
    19th -------- 44
    20th -------- 40
    21st -------- 36
    22nd -------- 32
    23rd -------- 28
    24th -------- 24
    25th & down -20

    Bonus Points
In addition to Position Points, every team participating in a contest will earn Bonus Points in the Overall and individual meat categories based upon the number of teams competing at that event up to a maximum of 35. This maximum number was achieved by using the average number of teams competing at KCBS sanctioned events held in the states of Arizona and Nevada over the last two (2) years – 2013 & 2014. (Total teams competing was 1054 and there were 30 events within the two states. 1054/30 = 35.1333 rounded down to 35) The Bonus Points available in any given Contest Year will adjust up or down based upon the level of team participation at qualifying events in the previous two (2) years.

    Example
Using the point system described above, let’s say that an event has 32 teams competing that day. A team finishing in 4th Place Overall or in any individual category would earn 140 Position Points and would also earn 32 Bonus Points for a sum of 172 Total Points. If the event had 47 teams competing that day, a 4th Place finish would earn a team 140 Position Points + 35 Bonus Points for a sum of 175 Total Points.

    Tie Breaking Procedure
If, at the end of the Contest Year, there are any ties for any position in the standings, they will be broken using the following criteria which will be applied in the order presented below:

    1. Average finishing position based upon the number of scores used to attain a Final Total Score in the respective Divisions: Six (6) for the Grand Canyon Cup, three (3) for the Copper Star
    2. Most Grand Championships for Overall or 1st Place finishes for individual meat categories
    3. Most Reserve Grand Championships for Overall or 2nd Place finishes for individual meat categories
    4. Most Top 5 finishes
    5. Most Top 10 finishes
    6. Coin Toss

    Rules Review and Changes
    Rules Review
Rules for the GCSBBQA ToY Points Race will be reviewed on an annual basis. The primary objective for making rules changes will be to maintain a fair and highly competitive structure which will ultimately reward excellence. Competitors are encouraged to suggest changes.

    Implementation of Rule Changes
Any rule changes to the GCSBBQA ToY Points Race will take effect at the beginning of each Contest Year. Mid-year rules changes are strictly prohibited. It should be understood that it may become necessary for the GCSBBQA Board of Directors to make clarifications of existing rules and to correct simple errors throughout the Contest Year.

    Code of Conduct
The intent of the Grand Canyon State BBQ Association Team of the Year Awards is to reward consistently high performance by Teams that exemplify the ideals of sportsmanship, integrity and fair play in competition barbeque. Participation in the Grand Canyon State BBQ Association Team of the Year Points Race is a privilege, not a right and Teams are expected to conduct themselves accordingly.

For example, any Head Cook and/or Team Member incurring any disciplinary action by the contest sanctioning body (KCBS) or contest representative (KCBS Rep) renders their Team ineligible for any Grand Canyon Cup or Copper Star awards. This is just one such example and should not be considered the only reason for disqualification simply because it is impossible to predict or define all forms of behavior that may result in disqualification.

Ultimately, determinations of ineligibility will be at the sole discretion of the Grand Canyon State BBQ Association Board of Directors.

Here are the specific Rule Changes and Modifications for the 2015 Contest Year as approved by the Grand Canyon State BBQ Association Board of Directors. Aside from changing the dates to reflect the year 2015, they are all related to changing the number of contests counted toward a Member Team's total score in the two divisions back to six (6) in the Grand Canyon Cup and three (3) in the Copper Star and the inclusion of Nevada events as Qualifying Contests. This should make both divisions more competitive, challenging and exciting. (Changes are shown in Bold Italics)

Vince - Is this still part of the GCSBBQA TOY?

It's July 2015 and nothing has been done for the 2014 TOY winners.
Do you have a timeframe on this?
Please post up some info so all the teams involved know what is going on not just for 2014 but the 2015 season as well.

    The short answer is "yes".

The long answer is that this was to be addressed at the May Board of Directors meeting which did not take place due to Skip's health issues. Funds for the purchase of these trophies need to be approved by the Board of Directors but, due to the resignations, that now cannot happen until a new Board is in place.

The GCSBBQA By-Laws state that a quorum is needed in order to allocate funds, etc., and the By-Laws define a quorum as being a minimum of four (4) Directors. So, once the new Board is in place, the Directors can decide what kind of trophies they want, secure cost estimates and then allocate the funds necessary to make the purchase.

OK- Thanks. In the future the BOD may want to start the process a lot earlier in the year. May seems like a long time to wait especially since you have all the information needed by mid December of the competitive year.
